AUIS student wins at Rwanga Awards 2018

AUIS student Heva Tahir was awarded a second place distinction for her “Floor Piano” project at the Rwanga Awards 2018 on December 6, 2018 at Saad Abdullah Palace in Erbil. Tahir is a 21-year-old student from Sulaimani in the Academic Preparatory Program (APP) at AUIS.   Her interactive “Floor Piano” utilizes several technologies to create a virtual piano using lights and motion sensors to produce music. Tahir was inspired by videos online of similar ideas, but she faced obstacles in replicating models she saw due to the scarcity of available parts in Sulaimani. She and a friend came up with an alternative method, using sensors, infrared and standard cameras, as well as a projector – all programmed using Java. “I was thinking of coming up with something that would put a smile on people’s faces,” Tahir said when asked what led her to develop the piano. “People love to try new and fun things in their lives.”
