Environment Keepers Club Launches Recycling Project

The Environment Keepers Club at American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) hosted a launch event to announce an innovative recycling project at the University on November 11, 2019.   The recycling project, the largest initiative of its kind at an Iraqi university, aims to achieve 100 percent recycling of single-use plastic water bottles at AUIS.   Sulaimani Governor Dr. Haval Abubakr addressed the audience at the launch event, and noted the importance of environmental initiatives in the region.   “It is on every one of us to work for the environment with the use of new technologies and new techniques,” said Dlawer Sofi Karim, board member of the Sulaimani Chamber of Commerce and Industries.   According to Diyari Shex Gharib of the local environment board, Sulaimani city residents produce some 1,300 tons of garbage each year, of which, 8-10 percent is plastic waste.   Environment Keepers club president and AUIS student Ismail Jamal also addressed the audience during the event, recounting how a class presentation by a local environmentalist inspired the project.
