A group of students from the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) Political Science Club visited the Kurdistan Region Parliament in the regional capital of Erbil on September 21, 2022. The group was led by student Mohammad Riaz Nassiry.
Students were greeted by the Parliament’s Protocol Manager before proceeding to the Parliament’s main hall, where MPs were engaged in a debate about new legislation set to pass. The AUIS student delegation then met Ms. Basne Farooq Jabbar, Relations Manager of the Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament. Ms. Jabbar gave students an overview of the legislative process and MPs work in the chamber. Students then met with the Parliament’s Chief of Staff, who provided students with an overview of the legislature’s history.
Following lunch, students entered the main hall to witness MPs debate a bill they intended to ratify and take a tour of the chamber. Overall, the visit was a rare experience for AUIS students to observe democratic processes in the region.
